LEGO Super Mario Minifigure Sets 2027 Investment Guide Image

LEGO Super Mario is changing – and investors should pay attention

After more than six years of electronic figures, digital interactions and buildable courses, LEGO Super Mario is about to undergo its biggest transformation since the theme launched in 2020.

On 1 January 2027, LEGO will release the first wave of Super Mario sets built around conventional LEGO minifigures.

Eight sets have been officially revealed, introducing minifigure-scale versions of Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Toad, Bowser Jr., Fire Mario and Fire Luigi alongside familiar enemies including Goomba and Koopa Troopa. LEGO describes the change as a refresh of the Super Mario theme, with future building experiences centred around creative minifigure roleplay.

For collectors, this is the moment many have been waiting for.

For investors, it creates an unusual proposition. We aren't simply looking at another wave within an established LEGO theme. These products effectively establish a new collecting format within LEGO Super Mario, and several contain the first conventional LEGO versions of globally recognised Nintendo characters.

That makes the January wave worth analysing set by set.

Finally, 72061 Fire Luigi vs. Koopa Troopa Battle contains 241 pieces and costs £26.99 / $29.99 / €29.99, introducing Fire Luigi alongside Koopa Troopa.

All eight launch on 1 January 2027.

Why the minifigures change the investment proposition

This matters because LEGO Super Mario has previously operated differently from almost every major licensed LEGO theme.

When LEGO and Nintendo launched the partnership in 2020, the centre of the system was a large electronic Mario rather than a conventional minifigure. Luigi and Peach subsequently followed, with courses and expansion sets designed around digital interactions.

That created an innovative play system, but it also meant one of popular culture's most recognisable characters remained absent from conventional LEGO minifigure collecting.

LEGO is now changing that.

The company says the 2027 refresh will be centred around minifigure roleplay, while confirming that existing interactive products will continue to function and that the Super Mario app will remain supported until at least December 2028.

For Investabrick, that distinction is important.

Minifigures have an established secondary market. They can be collected independently from their original sets, displayed alongside figures from other themes and sold separately. That potentially makes the new generation of Super Mario products considerably easier for conventional LEGO collectors to understand. And the characters involved are hardly obscure. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser and Yoshi are among gaming's most recognisable characters. 72052 Mario's Pipe Jump could be historically important – but scarcity is the problem Perhaps surprisingly, the cheapest set may be one of the most interesting historically.

72052 Mario's Pipe Jump provides the first conventional LEGO Mario in an £8.99 / $9.99 set.

The imagery is also almost perfect for an introductory product: Mario emerging from one of the franchise's green pipes with a Goomba nearby. If someone wanted one small set to represent the beginning of minifigure-scale LEGO Super Mario, this would be an obvious candidate. But its investment strengths are also its weaknesses.

At this price, LEGO can sell enormous quantities. Anyone wanting the standard Mario figure can acquire one cheaply, and Mario already appears in several sets in the first wave.

There should therefore be little genuine scarcity surrounding standard Mario. For collectors, 72052 looks close to essential. For investors, it may make more sense as an inexpensive historical curiosity than something to accumulate heavily.

72055 Mario's Beach Adventures has a different advantage

72055 deserves more attention than its size might suggest because its Mario isn't simply another copy of the standard figure. The set depicts Mario in swimming shorts.

Character variants can matter considerably once a LEGO theme develops a substantial minifigure-collecting community. Standard versions of major characters tend to reappear, while situation-specific clothing can be much less predictable.

That makes Beach Adventures an interesting set to monitor. At £17.99 / $19.99, the entry price is low, and the beach scene gives the product an identity beyond simply being another method of acquiring Mario. The key question will be whether this particular Mario variant remains unique.

72056 Luigi & Bowser Jr.'s Race offers two important characters

Luigi & Bowser Jr.'s Race may have one of the strongest character propositions among the smaller sets. It provides both Luigi and Bowser Jr. immediately. Luigi is inevitably likely to appear repeatedly throughout the future theme, so investors should not assume the first version will remain scarce. Bowser Jr. could be more interesting.

He's an important recurring Mario character without the inevitability of Mario, Luigi or Peach appearing constantly. If this version receives relatively limited reuse, the set could retain greater minifigure interest.

It is also LEGO's first Super Mario set specifically designed for children aged four and over, another small historical distinction within the theme. At £26.99 / $29.99, however, investors will probably want discounts rather than buying large quantities at RRP. 72057 Yoshi at Mario's House could become a sleeper Yoshi may be one of the most commercially interesting characters in the entire wave.

The £34.99 / $39.99 set introduces the minifigure-scale Yoshi alongside Mario and a Goomba, while also giving collectors Mario's house as a recognisable location.

Yoshi has enormous standalone recognition and a fan base extending well beyond buyers trying to complete the core Mario cast. That creates character-driven demand. The concern is price. With only 147 pieces, this is clearly being designed as an accessible 4+ play product rather than a value-focused adult build.

For investment purposes, therefore, discounting could transform the proposition. If Yoshi remains relatively uncommon and the set eventually becomes available substantially below its £34.99 RRP, it could become much more interesting.

72058 Bowser's Rumbling Race has character depth.Bowser's Rumbling Race is where the range begins to look more substantial.

The 409-piece set includes Bowser, Toad and Goomba, several vehicles and a brick-built Cow. LEGO's design also gives Bowser a larger character format appropriate to his proportions rather than simply trying to force him into standard minifigure dimensions.

The character selection is useful because Toad is another fundamental Mario personality, while Bowser is essential to anyone assembling a core Nintendo display. However, both Bowser and Goomba also appear in the larger Bowser's Castle. That duplication weakens the exclusivity argument.

Rumbling Race could still become desirable as an early Mario Kart product from the minifigure era, particularly if LEGO develops a substantial collection of compatible karts.

72060 Fire Mario & Bowser's Castle is the flagship investment candidate

If one set deserves to begin the wave on an investor watchlist, it is probably 72060 Fire Mario & Bowser's Castle.

At 850 pieces and £89.99 / $99.99, it is the largest of the eight officially announced sets. More importantly, its character selection is exceptionally strong: Fire Mario, Peach, Bowser, Koopa Troopa and Goomba. Bowser's Castle is also one of the most recognisable recurring locations in the Mario universe.

That combination matters.

The set isn't relying entirely upon minifigure exclusivity. Even if future products repeat Peach, Bowser and Koopa Troopa, the castle itself provides a recognisable display and play environment.

Fire Mario is another advantage. Standard Mario is almost certain to become common, whereas power-up variants give LEGO numerous opportunities to create a genuine character-collecting ecosystem.

Whether this particular Fire Mario remains distinctive will therefore be important.

From an investment perspective, 72060 currently looks like the strongest complete-set proposition in the first wave, although £89.99 is not necessarily the price at which investors should buy.

72061 Fire Luigi could become more interesting than standard Luigi The same logic applies to Fire Luigi.

72061 costs £26.99 / $29.99 and pairs Fire Luigi with Koopa Troopa in a 241-piece battle scene.

If LEGO follows the obvious path, standard Mario and Luigi will appear regularly while their costume and power-up variants rotate through different products.

That could make variants such as Fire Luigi more interesting to future minifigure collectors than the first standard Luigi. Again, exclusivity needs to be monitored rather than assumed. What happens to the original LEGO Super Mario system? The timing of this change is also significant for existing investors.

LEGO confirms that previous interactive Super Mario sets will continue working and that app support is planned until at least December 2028.

Meanwhile, reported retirement schedules indicate that most of the old course-building products are disappearing before the minifigure range arrives, leaving primarily display-focused products such as Game Boy alongside the new generation.

That creates a fairly clean dividing line in LEGO Super Mario history:

2020–2026: interactive figures and course building.

2027 onwards: conventional minifigure-scale Mario play.

The original system could eventually gain collector interest precisely because it represents a distinct period in the LEGO/Nintendo partnership. But the 2027 change may also broaden the Super Mario audience considerably by making the sets compatible with the collecting behaviour LEGO fans already understand.

Which sets have the strongest investment potential?

At this stage, Investabrick would rank the announced range approximately as follows:

  1. 72060 Fire Mario & Bowser's Castle – Strongest Overall Investment Interest

  2. 72057 Yoshi at Mario's House – Strong Character Interest

  3. 72056 Luigi & Bowser Jr.'s Race – Strong Character Pairing

  4. 72061 Fire Luigi vs. Koopa Troopa Battle – Interesting Variant Potential

  5. 72055 Mario's Beach Adventures – Variant Minifigure Sleeper

  6. 72058 Bowser's Rumbling Race – Strong Set, More Character Duplication

  7. 72052 Mario's Pipe Jump – Historically Important but Likely Very Common

  8. 72054 Racing with Mario – Attractive Entry Set but Limited Scarcity Case

This ranking is deliberately provisional.

No set has entered retail yet. We have no discount history, production data, retirement dates confirmed by LEGO or secondary-market evidence for the new minifigures.

Those factors will ultimately matter more than launch excitement.

What could go wrong?

The biggest investment risk is obvious: LEGO can make a lot of Mario minifigures.

This isn't a niche licence where a character may appear once and disappear.

Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser and Yoshi can support dozens of products. If the new format succeeds, LEGO and Nintendo have every reason to expand it aggressively.

That means investors should be particularly cautious about paying premiums simply because a figure is currently described as the "first" version.

The first LEGO Mario is historically significant.

It is not necessarily scarce.

There is also a production-length risk. Current third-party retirement tracking places most of the newly announced sets as remaining available through 2028, although retirement schedules can change considerably before then.

If that proves accurate, investors should have ample time to assess discounts rather than rushing on 1 January.

Investabrick verdict

Major Collector Development – Strong Investment Interest in Selected Sets, but Don't Buy the Entire Wave Blindly.

The arrival of conventional LEGO Super Mario minifigures is one of the most important changes to the LEGO/Nintendo partnership since it began in 2020.

Mario finally exists as a conventional LEGO minifigure. So do Luigi, Peach and several of Nintendo's other defining characters. More importantly, LEGO is rebuilding the theme around them rather than treating the figures as a novelty side product.

That creates genuine long-term collecting potential.

But the strongest investment opportunities may not necessarily be the most famous characters.

Standard Mario could become extremely common. Investors should instead watch character variants, less frequently produced characters, important locations and sets containing several desirable figures at once.

At launch, 72060 Fire Mario & Bowser's Castle is our strongest complete-set candidate, while Yoshi at Mario's House, Luigi & Bowser Jr.'s Race and the Fire Luigi set deserve particularly close monitoring.

72052 Mario's Pipe Jump may ultimately prove historically significant as the cheapest set containing the first conventional Mario minifigure, but enormous availability could prevent that significance from translating into scarcity.

For collectors, 1 January 2027 marks the beginning of an entirely new LEGO Super Mario collection.

For investors, it marks the beginning of the data-gathering period.

The first Mario minifigure is important. The first Mario minifigure that eventually becomes difficult to obtain could be considerably more important.
